Ohh what fun I had with that book, I would carry it around with me for hours, and it was by far one of my most cherished possessions. I remember having conversations with the characters, and at times they were my play mates. Because of the diversity of architecture styles, I was taken around the world. The characters were thoughts forms that had a type of autonomy, engineered by a boy who had not yet been taught how not to believe. I now understand that I was mentally creating an environment in the astral world that I would visit during out of body projections, and my night time dream escapades. I could taste the salt air when I stood by the house by the sea, and I could smell the pine of the log cabin in the woods. I would look at the pictures with such intensity, that I was literally inside the scene. This one book started my love for reading, and all the intellectual adventures I would later embark on in life. It was only over some period that I finally read every word, and that was a major turning point in my life. I did not read the book the 1st or 2nd, or 3rd time I tried. I was 3 at the time and I was just learning to read. I remember sitting under the sycamore tree just staring at the pictures. Kudos to you Theo LeSieg, long may your work continue to influence!!!

The issue has been cited as a start point of the bronze age of comics, and is notable for expanding the membership of The X-Men from beyond the white American cast to one of a more international flavour, even if some characters were portrayed somewhat stereotypically. The 68-page book was published with a May 1975 cover date and distributed to newsstands in February of that year. Chronologically it is placed after X-Men #66 and before X-Men #94. The issue serves as a link between the original X-Men and a new team. Though not a regular issue, it contained the first new X-Men story in five years, titled Second Genesis. It was written by Len Wein and illustrated by Dave Cockrum. Giant-Size X-Men #1 was a special issue of the X-Men comic book series, published by Marvel Comics in 1975. Quindlen’s talk, titled “Betsy Ray, Feminist Icon,” explained her fondness for the fictional heroine and her family by asking: “They are Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and Maud Hart Lovelace.” “There are three authors whose body of work I have reread more than once in my adult life,” Quindlen said at a meeting of the Betsy-Tacy Society in St. HarperCollins is reissuing the entire series in paperback due to what editors call “moderate public demand.” The books have also inspired a national newsletter with 1,000 subscribers, a national Betsy-Tacy Society, a fund-raising effort to maintain the homes in Mankato where Betsy’s and Tacy’s real-life counterparts lived, a Betsy-Tacy chat line on the Internet and a plethora of commercial Betsy-Tacy-styled items (from lithographs and pewter figurines to cookbooks). How odd, then, that the Betsy-Tacy books have become a kind of cult treasure among thousands who have read them, including such disparate sorts as singer / actress Bette Midler and Pulitzer Prize-winning former New York Times columnist Anna Quindlen. Lovelace earned enough from her books to support an easy, if modest, lifestyle with her husband in their later years-but she never became really rich or famous. Although Betsy-Tacy (as aficionados call the series) has never been totally out of print since the first book was published in 1940, neither has it become a household name. Giovanni Berg may never take the reins of the ranch his ancestors started in the state’s first days. The Fallini family also got its start in the Silver State in 1864, when Italian immigrant Giovanni Fallini settled in Nye County.įallini dabbled in mining for a bit, but by 1868 he was ranching near the Reveille Range outside Rachel.įive generations later, Fallini’s great-great-grandson, 6-year-old Giovanni Berg, follows his parents, grandparents, sister, aunt and cousins onto the range as the family works Twin Springs Ranch, running 1,800 head of Hereford beef cattle across two arid valleys in spartan central Nevada.Īt 663,000 acres, or more than 1,000 square miles, Twin Springs covers more than three times the acreage of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and nearly 10 times the area of the city of Las Vegas.īut even as the family has sustained a thriving ranch under some of the toughest conditions in the country, its grip on the land has never been more tenuous. It’s not just Nevada’s 150th birthday in 2014. The Fallini family has been operating the ranch for five generations. While Corellon shared the elven trait of pride that could border arrogance, this never got the better of him. He always appeared wearing a sky-blue cloak, a large amulet displaying a crescent moon within a circle, and a pair of dazzling gauntlets. His avatars stood 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and displayed exceptional speed, reflexes, and grace, as well as a strength obvious to all. While he retained the capacity to assume female or male form, he conventionally appeared as an androgynous male elf possessed of lithe build and preternatural beauty. However, in his love of Araushnee, he settled into the aspect of a male gold elf warrior, a counterpart to her female dark elf artist. As the personification of all things elven, Corellon was at once a warrior and a poet, a mage and a bard, and a male and a female. The slow build-up, Ditko’s dramatic panel work, and key dialogue from Peter that gets to the heart of Spider-Man’s philosophy (“Anyone can win a fight – when the odds – are easy! It’s when the going’s tough – when there seems to be no chance – that’s when – it counts!”) turns what could’ve been a simple scene of Spidey using super strength to escape into a defining moment for the character. In a sequence that lasts for a whole five pages, determined not to fail her in the way he failed Uncle Ben, he summons the strength to lift the nearly insurmountable weight. Aunt May is on the verge of death, her only hope being a serum that Spidey has. Spider-Man starts the issue trapped under heavy machinery in Doctor Octopus’ underwater lair. The “If This Be My Destiny” arc runs for three issues, but it’s the final one that cements the story as a classic. If Steve Ditko has a most famous issue on Spider-Man aside from Amazing Fantasy #15, it would surely have to go to Amazing Spider-Man #33, which features one of the best known sequences in superhero comics. |
